About

Toy Story Channel Surfing, also known as Let Me Take the Wheel, refers to a memorable scene from 1999 Pixar animated film Toy Story 2 in which piggy bank Hamm rapidly switches TV channels in search of a certain commercial. Starting in 2016, edits of the scene in which the sought commercial is replaced with other footage gained popularity online.

Origin

On November 24th, 1999, Pixar animated film Toy Story 2 premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the movie, Andy's toys are searching for a certain plot-related commercial on the TV, with piggy bank Hamm rapidly switching the channels with his hoof and accidentally skipping the ad.

- Let me take the wheel!
- It's too fast, how can you even tell what's on?
- I can tell.
- Stop! Wait! Back, back, back, back!

Spread

On January 7th, 2000, an episode of American late-night talk show Late Night with Conan O'Brien featured a skit based on the scene.[8] In the skit, the advertisement which Andy's toys were searching for was replaced with scenes from hentai.

On June 22nd, 2016, YouTuber kmlkmljkl uploaded the first known edit of the scene since 2000, replacing the commercial with the Dick Slap Vine (shown below, left).[2] On the same day, kmlkmljkl posted an ORA ORA ORA edit of the video (shown below, right).[3] The videos received over 28,000 and 18,000 views in three years, respectively.

In the following year, several notable versions of the meme were posted by YouTube users, with several of the earliest examples having hentai scenes edited in.[4][5] On June 30th, YouTuber Dolan Darker posted an edit of the video which gained over 108,000 views in two years (shown below).[6]

The meme saw a surge in popularity after an edit created by YouTuber SkylerHatesAlice[7] on Septermber 20, 2017, was featured in the Instant Regret Clicking This Playlist. The video accumulated over 210,000 views in 18 months.
