About

Transvestigation is a conspiracy theory that claims many high-profile celebrities are secretly transgender. Believers in the transvestigation theory are known as Transvestigators and are known to post images, diagrams and videos online "transvestigating" celebrities, often by examining their physical attributes, to try and determining whether or not they're trans. The theory became increasingly popular online starting in 2014, when Joan Rivers joked that Michelle Obama is trans two months before her death, leading some conspiracy theorists to believe that she was killed because she revealed Michelle Obama's trans identity.

Origin

It is unclear when exactly the transvestigation theory started or who coined the term. Outside of the conspiracy theory, there are several popular examples of people speculating on or "transvestigating" whether or not celebrities or "elites" are transgender, such as people trying to determine whether or not Jamie Lee Curtis is trans.[1]

The transvestigation conspiracy theory in specific became popularized online as early as September 4th, 2014, when Joan Rivers died. Two months earlier on July 3rd, Rivers made a joke that Barack Obama was the first gay president and that his wife Michelle is transgender (shown below). After Rivers died, some people online began to speculate that Rivers was killed because she revealed that Michelle Obama was transgender.[2][3]

The conspiracy theory is often linked to spiritualism and worship of the satanic deity Baphomet, who is often pictured with female breasts and a goat head. On December 18th, 2016, the conspiracy Wordpress[4] blog hebrewsisraelitesvsthereds published an article titled "The Baphomet Agenda and Transgenders" where this idea is explained, writing:

Satan's aim is to break down the ordained image of the Male and Female, contaminate them and produce his own image, which is that of a transgender / hybrid souless being, which is both woman and man animated by a demon ( the goats head). It’s common knowledge that the Elite, Hollywood, the music industry, the pharmaceutical industry and other interconnected entities and corporations worship the Baphomet, AKA the devil/the serpent/the deceiver/masonic order – Famous people like Kanye, Lady Gaga, Kylie, Beyonce, Bush, Obama openly salute the Baphomet, by their clothing, backdrops to their videos, handsigns , statues, jewelry and so on…

Spread

The transvestigation theory spread online throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s, with numerous Facebook[6][7][8] groups opening to discuss the theory. One group claims that some people are made transgender from birth and thrust into celebrity status to spread transgender ideology to the masses.

In May 2016, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones began spreading the conspiracy theory that Rivers was killed for revealing that Obama was transgender (shown below).

On September 23rd, 2017, the hebrewsisraelitesvsthereds blog[5] published an article titled "Hidden Transgenders Who Rule the World" delving into the subject of transvestigation further, writing: "As I’ve said there third category of people who are transgendered from birth. They are assigned roles in society of influence, power and fame, in all aspects of society, from Politics to music, education to Law enforcement."

One of the prominent figures in the transvestigation movement is YouTuber[9] Queen Inanna Snow, who started posting lengthy videos about transvestigation in 2019 (example shown below).

In June 2022, YouTuber[10] truthcorps7 began posting transvestigation videos where they show images of high profile celebrities and examine them in various ways to claim they're transgender, with some of the most popular videos transvestigating Gwen Stefani, various TV Reporters, Cher, Jenna Ortega and Brendan Fraser (examples shown below).

On July 18th, 2022, MEL Magazine[11] published an article about transvestigation. On August 29th, Fox 8[12] published a story about it. On September 17th, YouTuber Mia Mulder posted a video doing a deep dive into transvestigation theory and explaining the mindset behind it, garnering over 239,000 views in eight months (shown below).

Transvestigation became increasingly popular on most social media platforms throughout the 2020s, including Instagram and Twitter, where it has also become the subject of mockery by those outside the movement. Transvestigators are known to post graphics trying to point out secretly trans celebrities by comparing their skulls to the opposite gender's skull and other methods (examples shown below).

I once saw someone having a written panic attack on Twitter after claiming they went to a McDonalds and everyone else there – and that means literally everyone, including children, customers, and staff – was transgender (though they used the term "gender-inverted" IIRC). Based on the magic of "I can just tell trust me." I think clinical, not-in-the-meme-sense schizophrenia was at play.
Oh well. Now try asking them to investigate each other and see what happens.
