About

Trust Men or X is a phrasal template meme format most commonly shared on Twitter / X in which people reply to a tweet with things they'd rather do or become instead of trusting men. The format achieved virality initially on TikTok where it was known under the trends Trust Men or Die and Trust Men or Sing Chinese in September 2022 and March 2023, respectively. The meme then evolved to X in early November 2023 as users and meme creators shared jokes, videos and images about what would they rather do over the proposed question.

Origin

Although the exact date is unclear, somewhere in September 2022, TikTok users started to post videos under Rema & Jason Derulo's music "Ayo Girl" using the overlay text "Trust Men Or Die." One of the earliest viral posts (shown below, left) was uploaded on September 25th, 2022, by TikTok[1] user @michaelsamsonss, which amassed over 6 million plays and 795,000 likes in a year.

On March 14th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @nelisiwesibiya posted a video joining a new sound and text for the trend in which people used the "Trust Men Or Sing Chinese" overlay text. Her video (shown below, right) amassed more than 451,000 plays and 39,000 likes in nine months.

Spread

The trend remained prevalent on TikTok through early 2023, moving to X in early October 2023 when users started to post a series of snowclone variations of the phrase "Trust Men or X." For example, on November 3rd, 2023, X[3] user @virgosgrooviest posted a Beyoncé performance video paired with the caption “trust men or be the music industry,” which amassed more than 43,000 views and 2,800 likes in a week (seen below).

On November 6th, 2023, X[4] user @unsexuaIIy tweeted "trust men or be unable to act," to which user @armanisbliss[5] replied with a video (shown below) of Israeli actress Gal Gadot. The post amassed over 789,000 views and 21,000 likes in a day.
