About

Turtle Circle refers to a viral, CGI video showing turtles running in a circle at a quick speed. After the video was reposted to Twitter, it was spread by some people who assumed it was a legitimate video of real turtle. It was also remixed with various songs, making it appear the turtles were in a mosh pit.

Origin

On August 28th, 2021, Instagram user vernbestintheworld, a CGI artist, posted a CGI video of turtles running in a circle. The post gained over 25,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

On August 31st, the video was reposted to Twitter by @MiHeroeSinCapa,[1] where it gained over 18.5 million views, thanks in large part to a repost by @LovePower_page that gained over 37,000 retweets, 35,000 quote tweets, and 184,000 likes (shown below).

The quote tweets from the video largely featured people not realizing the turtles were CGI and expressing their surprise that turtles can run quickly.[2] The video also inspired parodies where people set the footage to various music. For example, user @ashleeenic0lee posted an edit that used Super Mario music, gaining over 800,000 views, 3,400 retweets, and 12,000 likes (shown below, top). User @1aurenmoose set the video to the song "Holiday" by Turnstile, gaining over 8,300 views, 80 retweets, and 310 likes (shown below, bottom).
