About
Vaccinated? / Vaxxed? is a catchphrase and ironic meme inspired by conspiracy theorists' tendency to question if someone is vaccinated after news about their unrelated illness or death is shared. Such questions point to a broader trend of COVID-19 denialism among anti-vaxxers. By mid-2023, various internet commentators began parodying the comments that ask if an ailing or dead person is vaccinated. The trend is similar to the Thanks Pfizer parody videos that circulated online in early 2023.
Origin
The anti-vaccination movement can be traced back to the 1990s when a now-discredited paper providing support for the claim that colitis and autism disorders were linked to the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.[1] After the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the United States in 2020, various conspiracy theorists shared propaganda against vaccines for the virus. The Thanks Pfizer trend of early 2023 speaks to such beliefs on the internet.
The trend of conspiracy theorists replying to the news of an ailing or dead person and asking if they were vaccinated has existed since at least 2022, with such questions gathering several thousand likes in 2023. One such early example was posted on March 30th, 2022, when Twitter[2] user @Davidbieri3 replied to news about Bruce Willis's declining health, asking, "Vaxxed?" The post gathered over 200 likes in a year (seen below, left). The trend continued into 2023, with Twitter[3] user @savingtradition replying to news about a basketball athlete's health scare on May 26th with the question, "Is she vaxxed?" The post gathered over 1,000 likes in two months (seen below, right).
In 2023, various internet users began mocking such anti-vax sentiments as they became more prevalent. On July 21st, 2023, Twitter[4] user @OnlyAWorldAway posted a screenshot of another user replying to news of a bodybuilder dying from a broken neck with, "Vaxxed?" The post gathered over 30,000 likes in a week (seen below).
