Conleth Hill's Reaction to Final Season
On May 12th, 2019, the episode of Game of Thrones entitled "The Bells" aired on HBO. In the episode, the character Daenerys executes Varys. Following the episode's premiere, Conleth Hill expressed some grievances he had with his character's arc.[5] He said:
I think they tried to make that work and couldn’t. It just felt like after season 6, I kind of dropped off the edge. I can’t complain because it’s six great seasons and I had some great scenes these last two seasons. But that’s when it changed for me a little.
That’s been my feeling the last couple seasons, that my character became more peripheral, that they concentrated on others more. That’s fine. It’s the nature of a multi-character show. It was kind of frustrating. As a whole, it’s been overwhelmingly positive and brilliant but I suppose the last couple seasons weren’t my favorite.
On May 26th, 2019, the Game of Thrones documentary The Last Watch aired on HBO. In the film, Hill participates in a table reading of the final season, including his death (clip below).
Many online interpreted his reaction as one of disappointment and anger as a result of his character's death. Twitter user @Peg_lin1 tweeted, "Varys throwing the game of thrones script across the table is all of us right now." The tweet received more than 260 retweets and 1,200 likes in 24 hours (shown below).
