What Is an Extreme Sport? is a series of joke tweets providing various examples of comically difficult tasks posted in response to a query asking for examples of an "extreme sport."

Origin

On November 5th, 2017, Twitter user @Mandac5^[1] tweeted "What is an extreme sport?", leading user @collin_ahmad^[2] to respond with the joke "apartheid" (shown below). Within two weeks, @Mandac5's original tweet received upwards of 1,700 likes and 300 retweets, along with numerous other joke responses.

Spread

On November 6th, 2017, Twitter user @Spotlight6800^[9] replied to @Mandac5's tweet with the quip "Raw sex while she's ovulating" (shown below). Over the next two weeks, the post gained over 41,100 likes and 18,700 retweets.

On November 7th, Twitter user @lolzdonz^[7] replied to the tweet with the joke "Changing your bed sheets by yourself" (shown below, left). The same day, Twitter user @unpleasantbabe^[6] tweeted a joke about rapidly finding a "meme/gif to send in your group chat before somebody else says something" (shown below, right). Over the next 13 days, the tweet gathered more than 209,200 and 144,000 likes respectively.

On November 8th, a screenshot of @Spotlight6800's tweet wqas submitted to /r/BlackPeopleTwitter.^[10] On November 9th, Twitter user @amazaleax^[4] replied to @Mandac5's tweet with the joke "Doing your homework while the teacher is collecting it" (shown below). On November 15th, the @worldstar^[5] Twitter feed reposted a screenshot of @amazaleax's tweet. On November 19th, the internet humor blog Smosh^[3] published a listicle highlighting notable responses to the tweet.
