About

What's Going On With The Moon? refers to a viral thread on Twitter in which a user explains that "fresh baby witches," identified as members of the the TikTok community "WitchTok," decided to hex the moon. Over the course of many tweets, the user explains why it is dangerous for inexperienced witches to attempt casting spells on the moon. The lengthy thread inspired parodies as users joked about the detailed and bizarre look into witchcraft.

Origin

In July of 2020, there were rumors on that witches were attempting to hex "the fae" (Celtic fairy folk with no ties to human morality) and the moon, and were rumored to be planning to hex the sun.[2] Most people responding to the controversy in TikTok's witchcraft community believe that they pose no threat to the moon and the gods, as they are too powerful entities to be brought down by mortal hexes. However, the act of defying them may anger the gods and the fae, and the witches who attempted to hex them may face a lifelong curse and potentially a cursed bloodline.

On July 19th, 2020, Twitter user @heyyadora[1] posted a lengthy Twitter thread starting with "WHAT’S GOING ON WITH THE MOON? a thread, because everyone is confused." Over the course of dozens of tweets, the user explained that "baby witches" (new, inexperienced witches) attempted to hex "the fae" and the moon. The thread explained why angering the gods Artemis and Apollo was a bad idea, particularly in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and that the witches faced dire consequences for their impudence. The first tweet in the thread gained over 33,000 retweets and 106,000 likes, with subsequent tweets gaining thousands of retweets and likes as well (tweet and excerpt shown below).

BASICALLY --
in the past few days, a group of FRESH baby witches* decided to band together, and hex the fae. and then the moon. and they did!
(theyre now planning to hex the sun. too)…
these baby witches specifically stemmed from witch tiktok “witchtok” …
it is EXTREMELY important to note that fair folk do not abide by human morals, because they are not human. morality is a human construct. fair folk are not inherent malevolent, but they have different customs than we do. but when they’re f***ed with, WHOO BABY. you’ve now got trickery for the rest of your life and maybe a bloodline curse! if you’re lucky. they’ll probably also steal your soul.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
well, for witches, the moon is integral to our work. most notably, it fuels spells and provides power. obviously you shouldnt ?? disrespect the moon
BUT ACTUALLY ….
the moon thing matters because there are gods that rule the moon. and hurting the moon, hurts them. not so much “physically” as hurts their energy / power and hurts them emotionally.
please stop hexing things and stop pissing off the god of health and medicine in a pandemic. thanks

This is Alan Moore, our world's Sorcerer Supreme. He's known to have cast several hexes on people adapting his work on other mediums – none of which have had any real effect.

If even he can't pull it off, I don't think a bunch of TikTok kids are much to worry about.
