White People Have No Culture

About

"White People Have No Culture" is an expression claiming that people belonging to the white racial classification do not have a unified cultural history. Online, the phrase is often used to caption photographs of white people in a variety of humorous contexts, accompanied by the phrase "like um try again sweetie."

Origin

In October 2013, deactivated Tumblr user diefuhrerin submitted a post titled "''White People Have No Culture'", followed by a series of photographs featuring various cities, artworks, events and other culture from areas historically populated by white people. Over the next four years, the post gained over 1,600 notes.^[2]

Spread

On June 4th, 2014, a post titled "What's this 'white people don't have culture' bullshit" was submitted to the /r/TiADiscussion subreddit.^[1] On August 9th, 2015, Instagram user @TheFatJewish^[4] posted a picture of a white family wearing Snuggie blankets with the caption "I hate when ppl say white people have no culture like um try again sweetie ;)" (shown below, left). On September 8th, Redditor fakeshits reposted the image to the /r/WhitePeopleTwitter^[3] subreddit. On February 29th, 2016, Instagram user davie_dave^[7] posted a photo of a man with calf tattoos resembling a pair of argyle socks with the same caption (shown below, right).

In March, a deactivated Tumblr account published a lengthy response to the anonymous message "white ppl have no culture," listing examples of cultural practices from a variety of European countries. Over the next several months, the post garnered more than 10,700 notes.^[5] On June 26th, YouTuber AlyGrace posted a video titled "White People Do Have Culture," prominently featuring various viral videos and Keemstar as examples of white people culture (shown below).

On October 9th, Redditor Bacon_timeGO submitted an image of various Bionicle characters captioned with "I hate when ppl say white people have no culture like um try again sweetie ;)" (shown below). Within two months, the post gained over 5,600 votes (96% upvoted) on the /r/me_irl^[6] subreddit.
