Who Want Backshots? is a catchphrase that originates from an Instagram Story in which a user offers "backshots" that was posted immediately after an in memoriam for his late grandmother. The catchphrase referencing the slang term has since been used with suggestive images of various characters in both image macros and videos with captions.

Origin

On February 14th, 2023, Instagram user popular_loner_zay_777_ posted several stories, including an in-memoriam message for his grandmother who passed away 14 years ago. The story was immediately followed by a looped video of popular_loner_zay_777_ thrusting his hips, captioned "who want backsh💔ts." (images shown below, left and right).

On February 14th, 2023, X^[1] / Twitter user @yunglame posted still images of the grandma story and the "who want backshots" story, commenting, "what the." The post garnered over 1,700 reposts and 19,000 likes in one year. Also that day, @yunglame uploaded a recording of popular_loner_zay_777_'s stories that received over 3,800 reposts and 29,000 likes on X^[2] in the same period (shown below).

Spread

The post did not achieve major recognition until November 8th, 2023, when Instagram^[3] user baseballscenefromtwilight posted a Memoji captioned "Who want backshots." The post (shown below) received over 186,000 likes in two months and saw viral spread online in the following weeks.^[4]

On December 3rd, 2023, X^[5] user @soulless4kmania posted a Jollyposting GIF based on the video. The post (shown below) received over 2,000 reposts and 13,000 likes in two months.

In the following months, the post remained a viral subject of memes and references online.
