About
Backshots Cave Painting is a viral image of a cave painting depicting a sexual interaction similar to the backshots position in which someone's back is facing the other (similar to "doggystyle"). The photo has been shared on Reddit, Facebook and Instagram since 2022 in various memes and image captions, resurfacing in March 2024 in a viral tweet joking about the act, saying, Backshots Are Truly Generational.
Origin
The photo used in the "Backshots Cave Painting" meme is part of a collection of prehistoric rock paintings in Qued Djaret, Algeria,[1] dated around 7-2000 BCE. The painting depicts two individuals copulating (shown below), and its earliest viral mention was posted on January 11th, 2022, by Tumblr[2] user @drpepperfucker, which amassed over 3,900 likes in two years.
Spread
On March 23rd, 2024, X[3] / Twitter user @ihyomeo posted the most viral mention of the cave painting to date. He tweeted the image with the caption "backshots are truly generational," which amassed 26 million views and 118,000 likes in three days (shown below, left).
On March 25th, X[4] user @kirawontmiss replied to the tweet about the backshot cave painting saying "mfs in prehistoric times:," which garnered over 233,000 likes and 16,000 retweets in a day.
