The trend involves a woman sharing an anecdote or practice she has adopted that she thinks is often embodied by men. The phrase "women in male-dominated fields" is a play on corporate DEI-speak, previously invoked to refer to women who make forays into typically male-dominated fields like STEM. The trend is similar to the #IHateMyBF memes that grew popular in the Fall of 2024.

The earliest known notable "women in male-dominated fields" joke was posted by Twitter[1] (now X) user @Puff_Iya on May 17th, 2023. The user quoted a post about a Daily Loud post about a woman who got "exposed for attending two different baby showers wearing the same dress for 2 different men."

The joke saw repeated usage on Twitter in 2024, with X[2] user @ImaniMulungi making a post using the catchphrase on January 2nd, 2024, quoting a post that read, "My friend is single after finding out that the woman he married (last weekend) was already in another happy marriage😀," and gathering over 17,000 likes in ten months.
On November 12th, 2024, X[3] user @gidanthe quoted a post that read, "Working out so I can beat my future husband," gathering over 200,000 likes in five days.

Jokes comparing women gaslighting, cheating, or otherwise being mean to their partners to "women in male dominated fields" continued on TikTok in Fall 2024, with TikToker[4] @stargirl4081 posting a video on October 16th, 2024 that read, "how it feels when I'm the one ghosting and gaslighting," with a caption that read, "We need to take over this man dominated field." The post gathered over 1 million plays and 300,000 likes in a month.
On October 20th, 2024, TikToker[5] @kjnny wrote, "When she played you so good you gotta give her a round of applause because its rare to see women in male dominated fields." The post gathered over 1 million plays and 200,000 likes in a month.

The trend took off in November under the hashtag #WomenInMaleFields, with TikToker[6] @ava_shwayhat posting a slideshow on November 15th, 2024, that read, "He sent me a paragraph explaining how he felt and I replied with "idk what do u want me to say rn." The post gathered over 6 million plays and 1 million likes in three days.
