About
X Has Officially Cut Ties with Kanye West is a phrasal template used in a series of parody announcements that a fictional or non-notable corporation has ceased its business partnership with Kanye West after his string of anti-semitic comments in October 2022 led to companies like Adidas cutting ties with the rapper. The meme is similar to the Andrew Tate Has Been Banned From X meme, which also saw users claiming the controversial influencer had been banned from platforms with no connection to Tate.
Origin
On October 21st, 2022, Balenciaga announced that it would no longer work with Kanye West due to his anti-semitic comments and apparent support of the White Lives Matter movement. Vogue followed suit that day. He was also dropped by Creative Artists Agency, which had been managing his tours. His music label Def Jam and the label he started, G.O.O.D. Music, were also said to have dropped West. On October 25th, Adidas then announced it was severing ties with West.
The string of brands distancing themselves from West soon led to memes imagining fictional and less high-profile brands cutting ties with West. One of the earliest parodies was posted by @SimpNeelix[1] on October 24th, 2022, joking that Gringotts Bank, the fictional bank from the Harry Potter series, had cut ties with West, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 9,700 likes in three days (shown below).
Spread
Over the following days, many other parody announcements of various brands cutting ties with West appeared on Twitter. Notable examples include an October 26th, 2022, post by Twitter user @Fer06_[2] announcing the Mexican food chain La Michoacana had cut ties with West, gaining over 5,400 retweets and 38,000 likes in one day (shown below, left) and a post the same day by @G0thCrocs[3] that stated shoe store Humberto Vidal had cut ties with West, gaining over 750 retweets and 3,000 likes in the same time frame (shown below, right).
