About

"You Are Safe Now My Sweet Child" is an exploitable webcomic illustrated by Chris (Simpsons Artist) which depicts a nude man feeding a slice of watermelon to a giraffe-like creature while whispering the quote. Following its release on Facebook in May 2014, the image has been edited and re-captioned in a variety of humorous contexts.

Origin

On May 1st, 2014, Chris uploaded an illustration of a nude man feeding an animal a slice of watermelon while saying “you are safe now my sweet child,” to which the creature replies “i owe you my life” (shown below). Within two years, the post garnered upwards of 10,000 reactions and 2,300 comments on the “Simpsons pictures that I gone and done” Facebook page.[1]

Spread

On December 13th, 2014, FunnyJunk[2] user joshuaro reposted the illustration. On April 19th, 2015, YouTuber Fed uploaded a video of himself narrating the illustration (shown below).

On March 4th, Redditor user Xaib[3] posted the image along with the caption "when ur broke and ur friend buys u food" (shown below, left). On June 8th, Redditor Murble posted another captioned version of the image titled "When ur broke and ur friend smokes u down" to /r/trees[4] (shown below, right). Prior to being archived, the post received more than 4,800 votes (90% upvoted) and 340 comments.

On June 13th, 2016, Tumblr user universequartz[5] posted an edited version of the illustration mocking a presentation by Hideo Kojima delivered that day at E3 (shown below, left). In 24 hours, the post gained over 21,000 notes. The following day, Tumblr user rawgeode[6] posted a version of the image praising the games shown in Nintendo's E3 presentation, which accumulated upwards of 5,000 notes in less than seven hours (shown below, right).
