Your Greed Is Hurting The Economy refers to a political cartoon by Nick Anderson depicting a capitalist man in a suit on top of a pile of money yelling, "Your greed is hurting the economy!" at a protestor on the ground who is holding a sign reading, "Raise the minimum wage." The comic was published in the Houston Chronicle in 2013 and became the subject of memes in the following years as an exploitable where people photoshopped the captions and imagery to change the context for humorous effect.
Origin
On December 10th, 2013, political cartoonist Nick Anderson published a comic for the Houston Chronicle where a man on a pile of money yells, "Your greed is hurting the economy!" down at a woman protesting for an increased minimum wage (shown below). The political cartoon is a statement on capitalism and money hoarding, and the comic is available through the Cartoonist Group[1] website.
Spread
The comic gained viral spread through reposts on a variety of social media platforms. On December 11th, 2013, the comic was posted by Tumblr[2] user fullpraxisnow, gaining over 788,000 notes in nine years. It was shared by The Young Turks Facebook[3] page on the 13th, gaining over 4,100 reactions and 21,000 shares in the same span of time.
On August 5th, 2018, Redditor NORATHEDESTROYER posted an edited version of the comic to /r/me_irl[4] replacing the cash with ketchup packets, labeling the capitalist "burger king cashier" and changing the protestor's sign to read, "can I have some ketchup," gaining over 2,800 upvotes in four years (shown below).
On August 20th, Redditor Pegassi_ posted a photoshop of the comic to /r/surrealmemes[5] replacing the characters with bees and the money with a pile of honey, titled, "In an alternate reality. It really do bee like that sometimes," gaining over 21,400 upvotes in four years (shown below).
On August 9th, 2021, a now-deleted Redditor posted a version of the meme referencing Minecraft to /r/hermitcraftmemes,[6] gaining over 1,200 upvotes in seven months (shown below, left). On February 15th, 2022, Instagram[7] user boysminemcool2 posted a version where the protestor's sign reads, "I don't want to tip" and the capitalist is labeled "waiters" (shown below, right). The meme was reposted by Instagram[8] user mememonk_ on March 11th, gaining over 38,000 likes in six days.
