Zombietwt

About

Zombietwt is an X / Twitter community collected under the hashtag "#zombietwt" for users who eat moldy or otherwise traditionally undesirable food, such as discarded food. Frequently, these users also roleplay as zombies. Some have eating disorders that lead them to eat this type of food, including pica, which is a condition denoted by the desire to eat things that are not considered food. The trend was purportedly started by X user @CruddyMary. While the hashtag "#xombietwt" has existed since as early as August 2020 among people roleplaying as zombies, it was popularized in relation to people with eating disorders in March 2024.

Origin

The earliest known use of the hashtag "#zombietwt" was posted by X^[1] user @neroenjoyers, with numerous other X^[2] users using the tag over the following years, although they seem to be in relation to simply roleplaying as zombies rather than eating traditionally undesirable food.

The earliest known post relating to #zombietwt in regards to eating disorders was posted by X^[3] user @CruddyMary on March 20th, 2024, in which she responded to a video of someone making a questionable dish captioned, "Mealspo for my zombie oomf," and writing, "I've had this twice w increasing amts of choc biscuits," garnering over 35 likes in five months. On March 27th, she made one of the earliest posts to X^[4] to use the #zombietwt, in which she roleplays as a zombie (shown below).

Spread

Over the following months, X user @CruddyMary continued to post using the hashtag #zombietwt, often posting about her meals. For example, on April 11th, 2024, she posted a "this or that" thread to X^[5] consisting of choices for zombietwt users regarding what they'd rather eat, claiming she ate a plate of raw fish, garnering over 1,100 likes in four months (shown below).

The community grew throughout 2024. On April 14th, X^[6] user @_cottagecals_ posted a thread further explaining zombietwt for people out of the know, explaining that some members have eating disorders and listing some members of the community (shown below, left to right).

On August 6th, 2024, X^[7] user @DIGlTALPRINCESS posted, "so I just found out there's a thing called zombietwt and basically they eat moldy things or find things like opened beers or like other stuff people just abandoned on the street or dropped. and they eat it. and I wish I was kidding," garnering over 96,000 likes in two days (shown below).
