About

Zoom Challenge is a series of TikTok parody videos in which people and pets are quickly pulled out of frame while a clip from the 2018 mumble rap song "Mickey" by Lil Yachty can be heard playing in the background.

Origin

On June 1st, 2018, Jaylynn Malone Tweeted a video of her sister sliding on the floor (shown below).

On March 9th, 2018, American rapper Lil Yachty released his second studio album Lil Boat 2, which featured the track "Mickey."

Spread

On July 18th, 2018, Women's Health Magazine[2] published an article warning parents of the risks associated with the "Zoom Challenge." The article states, "Smaller bodies, and even unprepared larger ones can be grabbed and moved too quickly, increasing the risk of neck injuries, whiplash, and concussion." The following day, The Sun published an article[3] voicing the same warning stating, "In some of the clips, children are shown bumping their heads on the floor meaning the challenge could result in serious injury."

On July 24th, YouTuber Jadyn Bear uploaded a video of a dog participating in the challenge (shown below, left). On July 27th, Youtuber Rad Potato Vibesss uploaded a video entitled "Zoom challenge compilation|| Animal edition" which has garnered 16,654 views in six months (shown below, right).

On July 28th, 2018, YouTuber RRR Cruz uploaded the first of many "Zoom Challenge" fail compilations (shown below). The video gained 91,450 views and 995 likes over the next six months.
