Brian Cox Goes Recounts The Story Of 'Tekken' In 'Tekken 8' Ad, Goes Viral
Brian Cox seems to be on something of a victory lap after his award-winning performance as Logan Roy in the comedy-drama Succession, raking in cash with humorous spots in ads in which he seems to be doing an exaggerated version of Logan for comedic effect.
While it might be humorous to hear Cox's gravitas wax poetic about McDonald's onions, he may have landed his most unexpected advertising gig yet when he was cast in a spot for Tekken.
In a five-minute video, Cox recounts the lore of the long-running fighting game series in anticipation of Tekken 8. As folks who have played Tekken know, the story across the franchise is fittingly ridiculous for a game in which a dude in a jaguar mask can fight a literal bear, but at its core, it's about the bloodline of Heihachi, Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama fighting and fearing each other, as well as throwing each other off cliffs.
Cox plays the monologue mostly straight, though he does do the occasional wink about the aforementioned cliff-throwing, resulting in a video that has amused and delighted fans of the series.
While it may seem odd that such a prestigious actor was picked to narrate the Tekken lore, Cox has a fairly extensive background in comedy and perceived "silly" pop culture franchises. In addition to his memorable turn as the villain in X2, he had a recurring role in the Super Troopers franchise and provided voice-acting for the Killzone franchise of video games.
The success of the ad leads one to wonder if other studios will follow suit in the future. Perhaps Square Enix could secure Idris Elba to explain the lore of Kingdom Hearts ahead of Kingdom Hearts IV, if they're willing to pay him for 45 minutes worth of monologuing.
