Comedy Central Is Rebooting "Ren And Stimpy"
Comedy Central announced this morning that it will be rebooting Ren and Stimpy, making the show yet another 90s cartoon revived by the network. Ren and Stimpy will join a Beavis and Butthead reboot and a Daria-spinoff called Jodie on the network.
Chris McCarthy, president of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, noted the reboot would be made with a "new creative team," meaning it is likely series creator John Kricfalusi will not be involved. Kricfalusi was accused of preying on and sexually harassing staffers on the show and a documentary about the series' early-90s rise and fall titled Happy Happy Joy Joy is set to release this summer.
It's not the first time Ren and Stimpy has been rebooted: a mid-2000s revival called Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon aired on Spike and went well beyond the edgy, adult-oriented content of the original version. The short-lived series was so critically maligned that Spike ended its animation block.
Reaction to news of the reboot was mixed. Some fans applauded Comedy Central for bringing back the show without Kricfalusi while others were weary of the continued trend of rebooted 90s content.
Holy shit. I was just talking about a Ren and Stimpy reboot on here last week. A hypothetical one and it's really happening. Wow. pic.twitter.com/ZV7IL7AyqS

Ren and Stimpy is getting a reboot! The famed Nick cartoon will be reimagined for a new generation and will join other revived cartoons on Comedy Central. John K. will also thankfully not be returning. Here's hoping this is good though at least it'll be better than the last one. pic.twitter.com/nATHJ90zYI

Look I love old cartoons as much as anybody, probably more. The original seasons of Ren and Stimpy were incredible. But we don't need to dig up the corpses of every 30-year-old show we ever watched and Frankenstein them back to life.

There is no word yet on when the reboot will air.
