Last year, for the first time in more than a decade, there were no new entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You might think that the world would welcome a break from superhero movies, but if you remember correctly, 2020 was kind of a nightmare. We're not saying that the lack of Marvel movies caused the pandemic, the insurrection attempt or that hologram of Kim Kardashian's late father, but it is an interesting coincidence.

Perhaps looking upon a weary world, desperate for another superhero film to fill 2-and-a-half-hours, Disney graciously announced earlier today that the much-delayed Black Widow would finally see release this summer. On July 9th, 2021, the company will drop the film in theaters and Disney+, where it would be subjected to the same Mulan premium pricing tier.

Originally scheduled for release last May, Disney has been pretty quiet in regards to Scarlett Johanssen's long-awaited spy thriller. As the original release date came and went during the early days of the pandemic, many assumed that it was just a matter of time before the company dumped the movie on Disney+, where it could have its inevitable flash-in-the-pan release before ultimately being forgotten, like Mulan_, "_Wonder Women 1984":/memes/subcultures/wonder-woman-1984/ and Artimis Fowl. Disney remained optimistic, moving the film's release to May 7th, 2021, before opting to push it again and make the film available to those with an extra $30 and a healthy fear of illness.

Disney isn't just releasing Black Widow this way. They're also putting their Joker-inspired Cruella da Ville origin story on Disney+ on May 29th, complete with the premium pricing. They also plan on debuting the upcoming Pixar movie Luca on the platform, without the fees or a theatrical release.

As for the other MCU movie that was expected this year, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it has been bumped. Shang-Chi is expected to have a traditional theatrical release, akin to something from the before times, on September 3rd.

It turns out that the normal we are also desperate to return to means a return to our legal obligation to see every movie Marvel released. At this point, many would probably sit through two Snyder Cuts just to be in a movie theater again and who could blame them?
