For what feels like a decade (but has in reality only been maybe 16 months), the worst-kept secret in gaming is that Nintendo is planning a successor to the Switch, with fans dubbing the hypothetical console "Switch 2."

There have been drips of information surrounding the new console, but all of that has been rumors from insider reports and not been confirmed by Nintendo itself.

It was pretty wild, then, to see Nintendo confirm a successor to the Switch not with a big trailer or Direct, but with a very businesslike, housekeeping-type tweet.

Early this morning, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa casually gave Nintendo's first confirmation of the company's next console by saying that an upcoming Nintendo Direct in June would not include an announcement of the console.

Perhaps Furukawa did this to mitigate fan expectations, as he may be well aware of the timeline many Nintendo have in mind for the company's roadmap. One key piece of information is a May 2023 quote Furukawa gave to investors in which he said the company would not announce the Switch's successor that fiscal year, which ended in March 2024.

Furthermore, the Switch's slate of upcoming games has been fairly paltry of late, as the glaring lack of blockbuster Switch titles on the horizon has many believing the company is holding off on announcing a new Super Mario or Metroid title until the Switch's successor is announced.

Whatever the case may be, Nintendo has finally acknowledged its successor to the Switch in public, and that was cause for celebration to many — even if they did it in the most blasé way possible.

It may not feel like a momentous occasion, but Nintendo finally did confirm a follow-up to the Switch, giving fans a free license to speculate about all the presumably cool titles they'll see in the near future.

Just, not in the very near future, because Nintendo isn't putting together a huge presentation about it for at least another month.
