Language-learning app Duolingo is well known online for its sometimes-overbearing presence, particularly when it wants users to keep up their streak of using the app, but apparently it has an even edgier, sexier side.

Thanks to a collaborative TikTok between Duolingo and face-shaped-sponge brand Scrub Daddy, the world now knows that the Scrub Daddy mascot and the Duolingo owl have had sex and are now parents to a litter of spongey Duolingo owls.

@scrubdaddy Words can simply not describe this beautiful moment. @duolingo #scrubdaddy #smile #cleantok #cleaningtiktok #smile #duolingo ♬ original sound – Scrub Daddy

Playing into the I'm Glad You Came TikTok trend, in which expectant mothers used a double entendre to thank their husbands' for their seed and the newborn child they will raise together, Scrub Daddy posted a TikTok where its mascot embraces the Duolingo owl before cutting to the owl firing spongey children out between its legs.

This viral video struck many as extremely bizarre for a multitude of reasons. For starters, why is the Duolingo owl hooking up with the Scrub Daddy sponge? Why is it giving birth to a frankly alarming amount of sponge children? What does any of this have to do with learning languages or cleaning products?

While we may never know the answers to the first two questions, we do have an idea about the third. Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Scrub Daddy founder Aaron Krause admitted the pandemic emboldened the brand to get a bit "edgy" on TikTok.

"For the last two years, people were home cooking, cleaning three times a day and they have plenty of time to sit and look at videos on their phones," Krause said. "And because of that, you know, the interest in cleaning products and sponges has gone through the roof and we’ve been right there with the engaging TikToks."

Krause has enjoyed the clear data offered by users buying Scrub Daddy products through the company's TikTok account.

"[I know] immediately how many people saw [a TikTok video]," Krause said. He can then track how TikTok users follow a link from a video to the company’s Smile Shop to make a purchase. "I know exactly the ROI on that. You can’t get that kind of data anywhere else."

Basically, Scrub Daddy is gambling that by making a wildly strange video to announce its collaboration with Duolingo, they could go viral. So far, it's working, as social media users have applauded the truly unhinged TikTok, and while it's unclear if the video is driving sales of sponges in the shape of owls, it's certainly garnered a lot of attention.

After so many years of brands flirting with each other on Twitter, perhaps it's refreshing to see that two brands just went straight to having intercourse — or it's depressing. Definitely one of the two.
