An NFL quarterback can bounce back from a 4-win season. He can even come back after becoming the brunt of memes. But getting roasted by Patrick Star? That just might be an insult no man can recover from.

Such is the situation Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson finds himself in after getting ethered by SpongeBob's dimwitted friend on Christmas Day.

The bizarre clip is a product of a wacky television deal that has given Nickelodeon one football game a year. Perhaps in an effort to make the game appeal to children, the Nickelodeon broadcast peppers in some references to the channel's iconography, like calling the routes players run the "slime trail." It can be a pretty bewildering viewing experience if you're only accustomed to the nuts-and-bolts presentations of traditional sports broadcasts.

The game's broadcast quirks included multiple guest commentary appearances by Patrick Star, voiced by Bill Fagerbakke live and appearing on screen using what appeared to be VTuber technology. This led to several surreal moments in which Patrick Star reacted to important plays, including a late-game pick-six, but the clip most people seem to remember is Patrick goofing on beleaguered Broncos quarterback Russell Westbrook.

The clip came in the first quarter with the Broncos still in the game. With the Broncos deep in their own territory and Patrick characteristically speaking like a moron, Russell Wilson threw an interception to the Los Angeles Rams' Bobby Wagner, to which Patrick commented, "That's not what he wanted to cook."

The game ended with the Broncos getting absolutely drubbed at 51-14, but many felt the game was over at that moment. There is simply no victory after Patrick Star insults you on live TV.

Perhaps in abject embarrassment after becoming the laughing stock of a cartoon starfish, the Denver Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett immediately after the game.
