HBO Announces Green Lantern Series For HBO Max
It's a bright day for the Green Lantern corps. HBO officially announced a 10-episode Green Lantern series coming straight to HBO Max to make those blackest nights a little better. Executive produced by Aarowverse-alumni Greg Berlanti, the series will be written by Seth Grahame-Smith, who is serving as showrunner, and Marc Guggenheim, also hailing from the Aarowverse.
HBO promises a series of epic proportions, stating that this will showcase adventures from across the Green Lantern mythology. Originally announced last year, the show will feature various Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz and Alan Scott and more. They write:
From HBO Max, DC, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise, a saga spanning decades and galaxies. Green Lantern will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott -- Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man -- and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
Ironically, Berlanti co-wrote and co-produced 2010s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds. A notorious box office flop, Green Lantern is often a punchline for Reynolds, who has gone on to star in Deadpool. However, with the success of the Aarowverse, which includes other Berlanti-produced shows like Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash, expectations run high for the new series.
In brightest day, in blackest night, no Green Lantern news shall escape my sight! Hour-long episodes, multiple Lanterns, and a story "spanning decades and galaxies." Get hyped! https://t.co/eBf0f1Z5wY

On Twitter, fans celebrated the announcement, hoping that a new series might be some vindication for the character's treatment in the past. Since the 2010 adaptation, DC has left the Green Lantern in the cold for the most part. The character did not appear in any of the DC Comics films, including Justice League, despite the character being an original member, which, depending on your opinion of the film, might be a blessing in disguise.
