After spending the last year or so denying collusion between the Russian government and Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump, Jr., tweeted a series of emails confirming that he did, indeed, plan to meet with a Russian lawyer to obtain damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Just in case this is your first time online in a few days, let's back up a little bit (and welcome back to the circus). Let's hope the break was refreshing and that you're eager to dive back into this craziness. On July 8th, 2017, The New York Times reported on a meeting between Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and key members of Trump's presidential campagin, including his eldest son Donald trump Jr., his then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Over the next few days, several associates of Team Trump made media appearances in order to defend Trump Jr. and the meeting in questions. On July 10th, Kellyanne Conway spent 35 minutes--much longer than the interview was scheduled for--on CNN fighting with anchor Chris Cuomo over the nature of the meeting, even as her team at the White House told Cuomo that she needed to wrap up.

However, within days, more information on the meeting came to light. Just before the New York Times could follow up on their story, Donald Jr., in the spirit of "transparency," tweeted three pages of emails between him and Rob Goldstone, whom President Trump first met while trying to set up business dealings between the Trump Organization and Russia. Goldstone is also a former tabloid reporter and entertainment publicist because that's how these things work. The purpose of those emails: Setting up the meeting that was recently reported on by the Times.

And just when you thought Trump had put the phone down, he tweeted a fourth page, which, among other things, sees him learning about an ongoing effort by the Russian government to aide the Trump campaign, adding that he would love to receive the information, "especially later in the summer."

To give a sense of how explicit the emails get, Goldstone write, "This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."

Not mincing words, upon learning of the emails, former-Vice Presidential candidate Senator Tim Kaine said, "We're now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what's being investigated, this is moving into perjury, false statements, and even potentially treason."

Since 10 a.m. this morning, the internet has been exploding with jokes about the emails, mostly dancing around the question of why Trump Jr. would admit to something so incriminating. The price of transparency is high.
