Ground zero for this variation of the hoax appears to be Twitter user @weedhitter, who posted a doctored Guardian headline announcing the actor's death in a freak escalator accident earlier today.

The hashtag "#RIPJeremyRenner" trended on Twitter in the wake of their post, although most people using the hashtag seem to be in on the hoax rather than genuinely spreading misinformation.

Jeremy Renner has long been a curious subject of death hoaxes — he was the subject of one in 2017 and another earlier this year while he was recovering from a horrific snowplow accident.
