The image comes from the 2009 music video for "Delirious," a hit single by the rap duo Vistoso Bosses, featuring none other than Soulja Boy. The video was shared to YouTube that year and at the 17-second mark, the "Girl With Headphones" source material is seen.
A GIF version of the clip was first shared to Tumblr in 2021. However, predominant memetic use didn't surface until mid-2025, when TikTokers began using it as a reaction image in comment sections.
Who Is The Woman In The 'Girl With Headphones' Meme?
The real "Girl With Headphones" is named Kelci Ferguson, who's half of the Vistoso Bosses duo. She was 16 when "Delirious" dropped, according to an old interview with Female First. The two are from Atlanta, Georgia, and were "label-mates" with Soulja Boy back in 2009.
They're both older now but still have an online presence. They even acknowledged the journey that their music video still has taken in a recent Instagram post. "When our meme is viral on TIKTOK 😂," was the post's caption.
How Is The 'Girl With Headphones' Meme Used Online?
The image is undoubtedly ethereal, explaining why it's most used to represent a feeling of music-listening bliss. At least, that's how it was first used.
Some of its earliest discovered applications on TikTok were in comment sections about the fake AI leak of Tyler, The Creator's "Don't Tap the Glass." Ferguson's blissful, butterfly-frenzied daze was used to satirize the "leak's" perception.
Since then, the image has spread across the TikTok comment-sphere and Ferguson's likeness has changed many times over. Meme creators have been editing her face using Photoshop and AI to fit stranger, more niche emotions.
Some of these edits don't even feel grounded in emotion, like one showing Ferguson's tongue wrapping all the way around her neck. It's just absurd. It doesn't appear to have any meaning and in fact might be rotting people's brains.
That seems to be the point with some of these. But not all of the reaction images are meaningless. One, which shows Ferguson in pink with hearts blossoming around her, perfectly represents a stronger love emotion than the original screencap.

On Wednesday, ahead of Halloween 2025, internet comedian Quenlin Blackwell shared a post on Instagram that showed her as Kelci Ferguson in the "Girl With Headphones" meme. Fans thought that she did a great job. "The Q instead of the B is a cute touch," said one top comment.
Another comment read in all caps, "[THANK YOU] FOR USING ACTUAL ARTISTS AND NOT AI." Notably, Blackwell credited all of the photographers, makeup artists and other assistants who helped on the shoot in the post's description.
