'Mr. Potato Head' Will Be Known Simply As 'Potato Head' Going Forward

Hasbro is degendering their spuds: the company announced that their Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head products, in production since 1952, will be known as "Potato Head" going forward.

The move was made to reflect the growing variety of family structures in society. As the typical American household grows more diverse in terms of gender and sexuality, kids who play with Potato Heads will no longer be locked into having heterosexual potatoes.

“Culture has evolved,” Kimberly Boyd, SVP and GM of Hasbro, told Fast Company. “Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences. The way the brand currently exists-- with the ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’-- is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure.”

Hasbro hasn't gone so far as to introduce a gender-neutral potato. In fact, they explicitly stated that one can still purchase Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head dolls—they will just be sold under the name "Potato Head."

However, as anyone who's ever used the internet knows, the cocktail of children's products and modern gender drew a predictable backlash, and the pitchforks were out in full force upon discovery that Hasbro was allowing kids to turn their potatoes into whatever gender they wanted.

This, in turn, led to a wave of people poking fun at the snowflake crowd making such a huge deal about the gender expression of make believe plastic husks.

And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceasely into the same discourse we've been having over and over for the last decade.
