The New York Mets looked destined for an exceptionally mediocre season this year, stumbling below .500 and being an overall dump of a team through the first two months of the 2024 MLB season. It was time to shake things up.

Grimace Shake things up, that is.

Last Wednesday, McDonald's mascot Grimace threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the Mets game against the Miami Marlins. Since that moment, the New York Mets have not lost a baseball game.

The Mets are 6-0 in what is being dubbed the "Grimace Era," and their fans, perhaps delirious because their team is pretty awful and 13.5 games out of first place at the time of writing, appear to have lost their collective minds over their new savior, Grimace.

Despite being mostly beans for the majority of the season, the Mets are only two games out of a wildcard playoff spot at this moment, thanks in large part because of their recent six-game win streak (they have also won 10 of their last 12 overall).

Grimace has demonstrated the power to make the surreal and sometimes wonderful happen, as evidenced by last year's Grimace Shake trend, a promotional campaign run by McDonald's celebrating the purple tastebud's "Birthday Month" that became a viral sensation.

McDonald's is running no such promotion this year, so perhaps Grimace directed his powers toward the lowly Mets.

Whatever the case, the Mets have climbed into playoff contention, and at the center of it all is Grimace.

If you're a superstitious Mets fan and want to attribute the team's recent success to Grimace, no one would blame you — but it's a long season, and there's a long way to go before Grimace cements himself as a legendary figure in New York sports.
