On what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday today, fans of the actress are donating to animal shelters in droves as part of the hashtag campaign "Betty White Challenge."

On the eve of her passing, Twitter user Lisa Powell suggested that on January 17th, fans should donate money to a local animal shelter in honor of the late celebrity. White was a famous lover of animals throughout her lifetime and worked with the American Humane organization for more than 60 years.

It's unclear if Powell's tweet inspired the birth of the #BettyWhiteChallenge, but the idea soon lead a flood of social media users to announce their participation by donating to animal shelters across the United States.

It remains to be seen how impactful the #BettyWhiteChallenge will be for animal shelters across the country, though it looks like it will be a boon.

“I’ve had many conversations with Betty about animal welfare, and I know she’s looking down from heaven and really smiling,” American Humane leader Robin Ganzert said about the internet challenge. "She’ll be smiling on her birthday, and she’ll be smiling about the lives she’s changed."
