Sir David Attenborough Breaks Instagram Record
Sir David Attenborough can add social media influencer to his list of job titles. The 94-year-old climate activist, documentary filmmaker, knight, broadcaster and one of the most recognizable voices in the world is now a record-breaking Instagram user, reaching more than 1 million followers in a little over four hours.
Meanwhile, it took the previous record-holder Jennifer Anniston five hours and 16 minutes to reach the milestone. Even sadder, it took Prince Harry and Megan Markle almost six hours, clocking in at 5 hours and 45 seconds, to hit that first million.
Attenborough didn't stop at 1 million followers. By the end of his first day on the Gram, he amassed more than 2.7 million followers and his first video garnered more than 12 million views. Pretty good for the near centenarian.
But he's not on Instagram for clout. Sir Attenborough is using Instagram to promote climate justice and stopping climate change, bringing his educational videos and legendary voice to the millions on the app.
"I've been appearing on radio and television for the last 60 years," says Sir David Attenborough in his first video, "but this is my first time on Instagram."
"I'm making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me, because as we all know, the world is in trouble. Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on and on and on."
This isn't Attenborough's only world record. According to Guiness, he holds the title for "longest career as a TV presenter" and "longest career as a television naturalist."
His latest film, A Life On Our Planet, an autobiographical documentary, premieres on Netflix in the U.S. on October 4th.
