The Russian Ruble Is Now Worth Less Than The Euro, Dollar And Even The 'Roblox' Robux, Inspiring Memes About The Russian Economy

As a result of sanctions levied against Russia during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the value of the Russian ruble has tanked to 30 percent, inspiring memes about the Russian economy and comparing the ruble to the steadier euro and even the more consistent Robux currency from the video game Roblox.

According to an article from Bloomberg News published yesterday, the Russian ruble has hit an all-time low in value, down 27 percent at 114.33 per dollar in offshore trading. In addition, Russia's central bank announced it was raising its key interest rate to 20 percent from 9.5 percent in response. This was all a result of the Western world imposing sanctions on the country, which additionally resulted in luxury items like cars and designer clothes being excluded in the new trade guidelines.

On both Twitter and Reddit predominantly, memes started appearing related to the new development. As anxiety about the conflict has grown, memes have become a response to both cope and clown on the Russian government — a government that's growing an increasingly poor reputation online. Multiple Russian economy memes were posted going into the end of February, many of which made humorous comparisons between the ruble and the euro.

A reference that started appearing in abundance was how many rubles it would take to make one euro or one American dollar. Meme creators started using image macros of lump sums of money, similar to Huell Rolling In Money or Money Printer Go Brrr.

It was also revealed in an article from Gamer Rant yesterday that the Russian ruble is now worth less than one Robux from Roblox. This viral headline was inherently hilarious, inspiring memes and reactions en masse.

Russia has long been considered "bad-ass" in much of its meme representation over the years, with the romanticization of the Russian people on subreddits like /r/normaldayinrussia and in ironic memes like Wide Putin putting them on a pedestal. But now as the Ukrainian conflict has started to unfold, meme creators are suddenly abandoning their affection for Russia and shifting their focus to being largely anti-Russian, dropping many of the more lighthearted Vladimir Putin memes and adopting a new hero in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
