According to an article from Bloomberg News published yesterday, the Russian ruble has hit an all-time low in value, down 27 percent at 114.33 per dollar in offshore trading. In addition, Russia's central bank announced it was raising its key interest rate to 20 percent from 9.5 percent in response. This was all a result of the Western world imposing sanctions on the country, which additionally resulted in luxury items like cars and designer clothes being excluded in the new trade guidelines.

A reference that started appearing in abundance was how many rubles it would take to make one euro or one American dollar. Meme creators started using image macros of lump sums of money, similar to Huell Rolling In Money or Money Printer Go Brrr.

Russia has long been considered "bad-ass" in much of its meme representation over the years, with the romanticization of the Russian people on subreddits like /r/normaldayinrussia and in ironic memes like Wide Putin putting them on a pedestal.
