Bella Poarch And Dr. Phil Round Out TikTok's Biggest Videos Of The Year

In what's sure to be a yearly occurrence, TikTok released its year-end roundup of the biggest videos, memes, sounds and trends of the year. To almost no one's surprise, the two biggest videos of the year went to Bella Poarch's hypnotic "M to the B" face dance and @420doggface208's chill ride to work. Elsewhere in their rankings, the Dr. Phil-inspired #YouHaveTo trend was named top meme of the year.
First posted in August 2020, Bella Poarch's video has amassed more than 500 million views on the platform. To anyone keeping count, that's more than half a billion views in less than six months. There's a scientific reason for this. According to Craig Richard, a professor of biopharmaceutical sciences at Shenandoah University, who studies the similarly satisfying effects of ASMR, viewers respond well to attractive faces, fast BPMs and the camera effect that keeps the head center of the frame.
"We enjoy looking at attractive faces. Adults, children, and even babies tend to gaze longer at faces that are deemed as attractive," Richard told BuzzFeed in October.
"These videos are using a new camera effect that keeps the head centered for the viewer. Dopamine is strongly released during positive moments of novelty, which keeps us focused and intrigued," he said. "Each of the statements above is not profound by itself. The importance here is that these videos seem to combine these components into a singular experience for the viewer -- resulting in something that is oddly satisfying."
You know what else is oddly satisfying, listening to Fleetwood Mac and sippin' on some cranberry juice. Nathan Apodaca, aka 420Doggface208, went viral in late September with his now-iconic freeway ride to work. TikTok named him number two in their ranking of the Top Viral Videos of the year.
Elsewhere on the list, @itscaithello's early-quarantine success "The co-worker you hate during a Zoom meeting" took the number three position. @jalaiahharmon performing her "Renegade" dance at the NBA All-Star Game, which feels like from a totally different time, came in at number four. Finally, rounding out the top five is Will Smith and his submission for the Wipe It Down challenge.
Most importantly, it should be noted that Dr. Phil's please stop calling "daddy" video was named TikTok's meme of the year. As far as TikTok memes go, it's hard to dispute that. He wants people to stop calling him "daddy," which is almost as funny as people calling him "daddy."
The rest of the memes list consists of challenges and trending hashtags, including #BlindingLights, Two Pretty Best Friends, #HurtMyFeelings and #RandomThings, which is more of a catchall than a meme.
