You know, timeline issues aside, this makes horrifically too much sense. A brilliant scientist, Stanford finds himself trapped on a parallel Earth in the 1940s after his brother accidentally sent him through the portal. In order to get back home, he tries to replicate his portal technology, and to get the required help and funding, he takes over a shower curtain-manufacturing company and turns it into a research laboratory that develop portal technology.
