Considering a new Ghostbusters with the original cast is now impossible, really the reboot route is all they could do. At this point the 2009 video game (which is really good) is the best you'll get when it comes to a "Ghostbusters 3" given it did get all of the original cast together (and being a video game they were able to model the characters to resemble the actors as they did in the late 80s and early 90s, since by 2009 they now looked old).

Personally I'm going to stay optimistic that the reboot is a good one, I mean the choice of actors actually is pretty good so far, and it's got the original movies producer working on it too. I remember the proposed plot to Ghostbusters 3 was that it was going to be the original Ghostbusters training a new generation of recruits since they are getting too old for the job, so way I see it the reboot is basically "the kinda sorta sequel to that never made movie following the new team."
