The ropes are just part of the helmet. My guess is they're there to help secure the helmets on the wearers.

The best I can guess is they're simply ancient warriors who have commited a ritualistic suicide in the past, judging from the hanging ropes around their necks. The Omen also had one on his neck, interestingly enough.
If the shapes of their helmets mean anything in particular, let me know.
