Toy Story - Buzz Lightyear was in denial of being a toy but still froze when humans were around?

I thought he froze because he was on a planet foreign to him and humans were unidentified threats.

I think I heard an explanation was that even when toys don't know they are toys they still have the instincts of a toy which includes freezing then a human gets close.
