Overview

The Murder of Austin Metcalf by Karmelo Anthony refers to the death of Frisco, Texas high school student Austin Metcalf, who was stabbed by fellow student Karmelo Anthony at a track meet on April 2nd, 2025. News of the incident spread in viral posts on social media platforms like Twitter / X. Metcalf's death was quickly politicized by both left-wing and right-wing X accounts, like Libs of TikTok, who pointed out that Metcalf was white and Anthony was Black, with some using the incident to sow racial tension in America. News outlets and tabloids picked up on the story soon after.

The politicizing of Austin Metcalf's death was met with backlash and outrage from many online. The father of the deceased, Jeff Metcalf, also spoke on Fox News about the media frenzy and said, "This was not a race thing. This is not a political thing. Please do not comment if you do not know what happened." In late June 2025, Anthony was then indicted for murder as the Frisco Independent School District (ISD) released surveillance footage of the fatal incident.

The trial then began in early June 2026, with Karmelo Anthony ultimately being found guilty of the murder of Austin Metcalf. The aftermath of the verdict resulted in the story and trial once again going viral, sparking some protests and heated debates on social media, which were largely centered around the racial issues surrounding the story.

Background

On April 2nd, 2025, 17-year-old Austin Metcalf was fatally stabbed at a high school track meet. From eyewitness accounts, the murderer was fellow student Karmelo Anthony, who was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

According to reports from NBC Dallas-Fort Worth and the New York Post, the two teens had a brief confrontation. Anthony was reportedly told he was in the wrong seat. Metcalf reportedly grabbed him, resulting in Anthony taking out a knife and stabbing Metcalf in the heart. Metcalf's identical twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, witnessed the altercation.[1][2]

Local police stated Karmelo Anthony admitted to the crime while being taken into custody, reportedly saying, "I'm not alleged, I did it."[5]

Trial and Guilty Verdict

On June 1st, 2026, Karmelo Anthony's trial began in Collin County, Texas, with the selection of the jury, which involved a pool of nearly 600 prospective jurors.[17] Opening statements began the following day, with prosecutors characterizing the stabbing as a deliberate and unjustified killing unrelated to race or self-defense, while the defense argued that Anthony acted out of fear during a chaotic confrontation initiated by Metcalf and others. Jurors reviewed surveillance footage, heard emergency calls and testimony from coaches and examined physical evidence connected to the incident.[18]

Testimony continued with students who had been present under the tent where the stabbing occurred, many of whom described Anthony as the aggressor and stated that he repeatedly refused requests to leave the area. Several witnesses testified that Anthony warned others not to touch him and implied that he possessed a weapon, while the defense highlighted inconsistencies in witness statements and emphasized the physical disparity between Anthony and Metcalf.[18]

After the prosecution rested, the defense presented witnesses who disputed aspects of the state's narrative, including testimony suggesting that Metcalf made physical contact first and that it was not uncommon for athletes from different schools to share tents during competitions. The defense also noted that carrying the type of knife used in the stabbing was legal under Texas law, despite violating school policy. Anthony did not testify in his own defense.[18]

Following the closing arguments on June 9th, 2026, the jury deliberated for approximately three hours before finding Anthony guilty of murder. Jurors rejected the defense's "sudden passion" claim and sentenced him to 35 years in prison.[19]

The conclusion of the trial was reported on by the FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth YouTube channel that day, garnering over 220,000 views, 5,800 likes and 6,480 comments in 14 hours.
