Gonna say it, he’s the best character in anime, period. Best dad, best husband, best friend, best everything. There is not a spec of bad to him whatsoever. He offered Ed and Al a home when no one else did. He offered Winry a place to stay, again, when no one else did. He loved his family so much that his co-workers were fed up hearing about it. He stuck by Mustang’s side through thick and thin, even in the Ishvalan civil war. He discovered the Homunculus’ plan entire arcs before everyone else. His death made Mustang cry, and he never cries, even being the reason for the whole “It’s a terrible day for rain” meme. He is the last person in any fiction who deserved to die and anybody who comes up with a character more fitting for best character in anime, period, better offer a fucking saint, because there’s no way they’re gonna be better than this guy.

Seriously, if more people were like Maes Hughes, this would be a perfect world :)
