0 Tom Nook is a corporate crook. Nintendo locking content & charging for online pay is a shame. Nook gives deadline & interest free mortgages to homeless villagers. He's a just trying to keep his adopted kids fed! $20 a year is cheaper than other consoles' subscription services. What right do we have to Nook's a slumlord who entraps tennants with forced mortgage schemes, monopolizes the village economy, & forces his employees into fiscal slavery! They're inconsistently holding games ransom, crippling communities of loyal players for a feature no one seems to want or understand! Just like tanukis in folklore have shifted from tricksters to symbols of commerce, later games frame Nook as an upstanding entrepreneur & philanthropist you can hire to build your house! You can't keep criticizing Nintendo for being behind the curve on online features & then ALSO get mad when they try to catch up! Empathetic capitalism is a myth. The rapacity of banks & collection agencies doesn't exempt "friendly" small business owners who promise to be slightly less exploitative! Games are opportunities to imagine better systems. Why does a game about a pastoral idyll involve paying o debt to a paternalist oligarch? Our villages deserve better! Game subscriptions are already an outdated model! They aren't even getting cloud saves right! Why poorly mimic other console's least popular features when you could market yourself as having free online play & make money off your robust library of virtual console games? ff
