Here's some design tips demonstrated by this image.

The most natural face has the edges of the nose lining up with the medial corners of the eyes while the corners of the mouth line up with the pupils. This is true regardless of the facial proportions otherwise. The new face demonstrates this perfectly, such that despite being more apparently cartoonish it still feels more relaxing and natural to look at.

Now look at the old face. The edges of the nose sit within the medial corners of the eyes, giving the appearance of both a withered nose and wide set eyes. The corners of the mouth aligning with the medial corners of the eyes is common in cartoons and suggests harmlessness and neoteny. However, this conflicts with both the wide set eyes and the realistic textures and setting of the image.

Conclusions: Despite having bigger eyes and being all-around more cartoonish, the new face actually looks more handsome, natural, and adult than the old face, which looks like an ugly cartoon baby wrapped in a blue animal pelt.
