Question, how does Canada successfully resisting US influence suddenly make this a false equivalence?

I agree that the USSR was a way bigger threat, but going by history both are pretty guilty of colonization and toppling democratic governments for their own interests. I don't see how one being more violent/threatening refutes the meme. Care to explain?
