The problem with that is JJ had his chance before but said nah, I will just set some stuff up for a trilogy but make a movie that is highly dependant on future movies to be considered good. Then Ryan is like fuck all this shit, I will make a movie specifically to say fuck you to as many people as I can, because I don't like Star Wars, and then we got the Last Jedi and JJ tried to make what amounts to the second and third movies in a trilogy as one film, no amount of freedom would have saved the new trilogy.

The sequels is basically a textbook example of how not to do a trilogy.
