We have books and museums for that, though. Or what, you really think someone at some point was like "yes, let's make a expensive, ostentous statue of this historical figure – with no context for those that don't know him, showing him on a magnanimous way and put right in the middle of a public setting – just for educating people of his wrongdoings so that they don't repeat his mistakes"..? Next, you will tell us that all those Trump statues – most of which were made by his own orders to do so – are there merely for educational purposes to raise awareness of his wrongdoings that people already talk about all the time. And do not even get me started with North Korean statues: you would be outright moronic if you believed those are made for anything else other than glorification of those they portray.
You give humanity's ego too much credit, really. And I am not condoning the vandalism these statues get, either. That is always wrong, but to think that a statue's main purpose is not to either glorify or at least show a person or concept in a positive light is wishful thinking at best. The Statue of Liberty was not exactly made to remind Americans of their bloody history of war and conquest, you know. Pretty sure that the word "liberty" does not evoke a message of "reminiscing on past ills". And again, if it is about history, we have books and museums that do a better job at that. Germany did not keep its many Hitler statues, but his name is not banned from history books.
