Notes:

A trolley is barreling down the tracks toward a three-way railroad switch. The switch is currently set to the middle track, to which a person has been tied. If nothing is done, this person will die, and the trolley will be diverted from its proper path, delaying its arrival. Switching to the right track* will put the trolley back on its proper path, but the right track also has five people tied to it instead of one. Switching to the left track will insure that nobody dies, at the cost of further delaying the trolley's arrival.** While you can't move the switch yourself, you can enable someone else to do so. The donkey promises to switch to the left track, but may not be strong enough to budge the switch. The elephant seems significantly stronger than the donkey, but will almost certainly switch to the right track and violently resist any attempts to switch away from it. Who will you choose to man the switch?

*From the perspective of the person manning the switch.

• **Regardless of what track is picked, the trolley will most likely reach its destination safely. Even if it doesn't, the trolley and everything on it are insured. The people tied to the track are not.
