Someone pointed out there's a certain irony in people constantly bitching about "anime swordsman" but yet one of the most requested characters is Dante, who people prefer when he's anime as fuck because the one time he wasn't anime people hated it. Not Sakurai's fault one of the most common weapons in video games period tends to be swords (plus you know damn well if Master Chief got in they'd work the energy sword into his moveset, and I bet you Doom Slayer would totally use the Crucible).

Depends on what you picture as "battle"
Man to man, swords are great. They can reach with stabs, they can slash up close, they're man-portable, they're energy-efficient. Scale things up to an army, and you want spears and bows before swords
