Seeing as it's not possible to get a description of the psychic effects of drugs from test animals for reasons obvious, scientists have to come up with indirect ways to measure them. A bright spark thought of gauging a drug's hallucinogenic potency by how often a dosed animal twitched their heads to try to focus on something which isn't actually there, and it turned out to be a good predictor.
