This picture is of a streamlined New York Central Railroad 4-6-2 Pacific type locomotive preparing for departure on the Mercury route.

The Mercury_] was a passenger train that ran throughout all the Midwest, with routes radiating out from Detroit to Chicago, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. The locomotives were streamlined a la Streamline Moderne – a type of Art Deco style that gained traction in the 1930s. Designed by Henry Dreyfuss, It's success lead to the NYCR commissioning him to redesign another famous passenger route, [_The 20th Century Limited.
