The text from this comes from All Quiet on the Western Front. which is spoken by Paul Baumer after he fails to save Gérard Duval, the French soldier whom he mortally stabbed earlier in the night after he fell into the fox hole Paul was sheltering in.

It is only by the light of day that Paul sees him for the first time as not this faceless threat that only seeks to kill him and all of his comrades, but as a fellow human being, just like him.
