About

Violet Evergarden is a manga series written by Kana Akatsuki, illustrated by Akiko Takase, and published by Kyoto Animation. It is a "light novel" (manga directed at teens and young adults) series following Auto Memory Dolls created by a doctor to help his blind wife write novels by generating voice to text, and later a second company used the technology to create dolls that also performed military functions. The story follows the title character, an Auto Memory Doll who has lost her arms and memory in war and joins the CH Postal Company with the quest of understanding the words "I love you" said to her by her deceased military superior. In January of 2018, an anime version of the series began streaming on Netflix.

History

Manga

After winning the grand prize at the fifth annual Kyoto Animation Awards,[1] Kyoto Animation published the first volume of the light novel series Violet Evergarden on December 25th, 2015 (cover shown below). A second volume was released on December 26th, 2016. The latest volume is set for release on March 23rd, 2018.

Anime

An anime adaptation of the first volume was announced in May of 2016 (trailer shown below). The anime is directed by Taishi Ishidate at Kyoto Animation and written by Reiko Yoshida. In June of 2017, Anime Expo, AnimagiC, and C3 AFA Singapore 2017 premiered the first episode of the anime. On January 10th, 2018 Kyoto Animation premiered the first episode of the 14-episode series. On January 11th, the series began streaming on Netflix. The episodes are released weekly. As of February 1st, 2018, four episodes have aired.



Online Presence

The series was favorably reviewed by fans. On MyAnimeList,[2] the series has a score of 8.52/10 based on user scores over 27,000 ratings. The anime has a rating of 8.6 on IMDb.[4] The series also has a page on Wikia.[3] A subreddit for the manga and anime has over 990 subscribers.[5] Additionally, the series has a large fan art on sites such as Zero Chan.[6]
